After attending some of the most important auto shows on the planet, like Geneva, Paris and Frankfurt, I’ve seen almost every car you can think of. What surprises me though, is the ever increasing number of car manufacturers that use the Dinamica eco-suede made by the Italian company MIKO, based in Gorizia.
The Italian company was established in 1997 and it produces Dinamica®, the first ecological and high-performance microfiber used in several sectors of application, ranging from furnishing to fashion, marine, and contract. However, is the automotive field where the Dinamica® suede takes the biggest slice of the cake. Dinamica® meets the highest standards of total safety and comfort; it contains recycled polyester which derives from polyester fibres and PET, eg. bottles, plastics etc.; it’s100% recyclable at the end of its useful life, thanks to the use of neutral and non-toxic dyes.
Their material is soft, giving at the same time a sporty yet luxurious feel; it’s used on everyday cars like the newly-revealed Volvo XC40, Range Rover Velar or the pocket rocket A110 by Alpine, but also on top-notch luxury saloons like the Mercedes-Maybach S650 for covering plushy head cushions.
Speaking of Mercedes-Benz, the German brand has just released at the latest Geneva Auto Show the redesigned A-Class, G-Class and CLS, and guess what material is the interior covered in?
On the G63 and CLS the Dinamica suede upholsters the ceiling, B-pillars and sunvisors. On the A220 the front and back seats, as well as the the door cards. This time Mercedes decided to opt for contrast stitching instead of electro-welded stripes like on the old model, but the Italian suede still plays the main role.
American brands like Ford and Jeep use the eco-suede on tens of different models too, as seen on this Fiesta ST and Grand Cherokee SRT8 Track Hawk.
Recycling polyester means reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions into the atmosphere by 80% compared to the traditional petrol-based polyester production process; this approach really sets the company apart from its competitors.
Throughout the years the company has been acclaimed by many for its commitment to the environment, Miko won the Italian Environmental Business Award 2011 as Best Product of the Year, while in July 2013 the company was awarded as National Champion for Italy in the 2013/14 European Business Awards and selected by the jury to run for The Millicom Award for Environmental & Corporate Sustainability category in 2014.
